The iconic Mountain of Montserrat, distinguished by its unique natural formations, is situated approximately 50 kilometers from Barcelona. It encompasses the sanctuary of the Virgin Mary of Montserrat and a Benedictine monastery that has been serving pilgrims for nearly a millennium, drawing visitors from across the globe to venerate the Black Madonna.

Given its striking landscape and religious significance, Montserrat has established itself as a prominent destination for tours and outdoor activities, including high-level rock climbing, partly due to its accessible location.

The revered image of Our Lady of Montserrat, known locally as La Moreneta due to her darkened skin tone, is a 12th-century Romanesque sculpture renowned for its artistic and spiritual value. Declared Patron Saint of Catalonia in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII, it was placed in a silver altarpiece funded by public contributions in 1947 and remains an object of daily veneration by countless worshippers.

Montserrat also hosts one of Europe's oldest boys’ choirs, the Escolania. The choir’s performances during religious services and communal prayers are marked by their refined vocal quality, a result of rigorous musical training administered within the Benedictine community’s framework.

The Museum of Montserrat features several notable collections: Archaeology from the Biblical East with artifacts from Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Cypriot, and Holy Land cultures; an extensive collection of early paintings by artists such as Berruguete, El Greco, Caravaggio, and Tiepolo; a significant selection of modern art and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries including works by Rusiñol, Casas, Nonell, Picasso, Dalí, Monet, Sisley, and Degas; and the Nigra Sum collection displaying Byzantine and Slavic iconography related to Our Lady of Montserrat and Phos Hilaron, designed to evoke an Eastern Orthodox church setting with strategic lighting.

The audiovisual room complements the visitor experience by offering educational content that explores Montserrat’s importance through three central themes: the mountain itself, the monastery, and the sanctuary.

Montserrat also functions as an open-air museum, featuring sculptures by distinguished artists such as Josep M. Subirachs. Notable contributions include the Monumental Rosary with works by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Antoni Gaudí, Josep Llimona, and the Vallmitjana brothers, adding artistic richness to this sacred landscape.
